At 5 o’clock in the morning, somewhere in the Southeastern United States, before the majority of people have even stirred from their slumber, Darnelle Howell (DH) is already awake and engaged in prayer and meditation. Once he completes his spiritual practice, he fills his 2-liter water bottle and prepares a cup of turmeric green tea with ginger. Following this morning routine, he delves into reading Bloomberg and promptly immerses himself in his work.

DH’s typical workday encompasses a multitude of roles, reflecting his commitment to advocating for proper sleep and mental health breaks. As a father of two, he wears many hats, including those of a Serial Entrepreneur, a Founder/Executive Director of a Nonprofit, Consultant, Board Member, Mentor, and even a Student. Additionally, he finds solace and enjoyment in being an Avid Golfer.

Q: How does your passion motivate you to go out and be great?

DH:

“I strive for greatness in everything I undertake, whether it’s as mundane as vacuuming the floor or as significant as constructing a building. I hold myself and those who work with me to high standards, aspiring for nothing less than excellence. I am not content with being average; I am determined to be extraordinary. My goal is to have a positive impact on everyone I encounter and leave them better off than when I found them. I firmly believe that the energy I radiate is reciprocated.”

Q: What are three things you want to be remembered for and why?

DH:

“First and foremost, I want to be remembered as a man who faced numerous failures but consistently found the strength to rise again. It is through my failures that I have arrived at my current position and identity. I view failures as invaluable lessons that one can learn from and share with others. Therefore, I desire for people to draw not only from my successes but also from my failures.”

“Secondly, I aspire to leave a lasting legacy for my children, family, and community, particularly the Blackbelt Community in Alabama. I find inspiration in the achievements of A.G. Gaston and the empire he built, driven by his purpose. I aim to foster the next generation of young Black business leaders who possess the potential to build upon his foundation.”

“I want to assist millennials of color in navigating contemporary society, moving beyond the disproportionate emphasis placed on college degrees over practical experience. I hope to serve as an example that focus, hard work, determination, and resilience are the essential ingredients for fulfilling one’s dreams.”

Q: Speaking of millennials, what is the most significant piece of advice you want to impart to the next generation to ensure their success?

DH:

“Take the time to educate yourself on what truly matters to you. Surround yourself with the right people who can support and guide you. Write down your aspirations and set goals. Never hesitate to ask questions. Wake up each day with a strong belief in your rightful place in the world, and most importantly, remember that you cannot achieve success alone—keep God first and foremost in your life.”
